How Are Steroid Injections Administered?
Steroid injections are administered exclusively by healthcare professionals in medical settings such as hospitals, wellness clinics, or general practitioner (GP) surgeries. These injections can be given in different ways, including:
-
Intra-articular injections – directly into a joint to reduce inflammation and pain.
-
Intramuscular injections – into a muscle or other soft tissue area for broader anti-inflammatory effects.
Most steroid injections begin to take effect within a few days, though some may work within hours. The relief typically lasts for an average of three months, but in some cases, effects can be longer-lasting.
If the injection is intended for pain relief, it may also contain a local anesthetic, which provides immediate but temporary relief. Once this wears off, pain may briefly return and could worsen for a day or two before the steroid starts to take full effect.
After the procedure, patients can usually go home shortly afterward. It is advisable to rest the treated area for a few days. If post-injection discomfort occurs, avoid driving until symptoms improve.

What Are Steroid Injections?
Steroid injections, also known as corticosteroid injections, are powerful anti-inflammatory treatments used to alleviate pain and swelling associated with various conditions. They are commonly used to manage joint pain, arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, and other inflammatory conditions affecting the soft tissues and joints.

Potential Side Effects of Steroid Injections
While steroid injections are generally safe, some individuals may experience side effects depending on the injection site. Possible side effects include:
-
Mild pain or discomfort for a few days (paracetamol may help alleviate this).
-
Temporary bruising, bleeding, or blood accumulation under the skin.
-
Facial flushing for a few hours.
-
Temporary vision changes, such as blurred vision (consult a doctor if this occurs).
-
Rare risk of infection at the injection site, causing redness, swelling, and pain (occurs in approximately 1 in 15,000 cases; seek immediate medical advice if these symptoms appear).
-
Fat loss at the injection site, leading to dimpling in the skin (potentially permanent).
-
Skin discolouration around the injection area (may be permanent).
For individuals with underlying health conditions:
-
Those with diabetes may experience a temporary increase in blood sugar levels.
-
Individuals with high blood pressure may notice a temporary rise in blood pressure.
